Do What You Love

Have you ever wondered why so many of the goals that you set are not achieved? Do you sometimes count yourself a failure because you faltered and fell at the first hurdle?

It took me a long time to realize that one of my biggest reasons for failure was because my goals and my true talents were not in line with each other. I used to set goals that involved doing things that I found incredibly hard, didn't have much talent for and actually didn't enjoy very much.

As soon as I set out to achieve something positive in an area where I had expertise or doing something that I loved, the whole process went much faster. I was far more likely to finish my projects and I got ten times the pleasure and satisfaction from them.

Ask yourself these three questions to make sure that your goals are aligned with your talents and skills.

  1. What do I love to do? We all have something, some hobby, perhaps, or activity that we totally adore. We might get very little chance to do it but when we do, we become alive. These are the activities that completely absorb us, leave us feeling totally relaxed and at peace with the world and that make us feel whole, while we are engaged in them.
  2. Do I love doing this so much that I would gladly do it for nothing? This is the test of a true passion. If we have an activity or a talent which rewards us in completely non-monetary ways and we don't care about that because we love it so much; then it is truly our way forward. Another clue is if it is something we spend most of our time thinking about and that makes us eagerly leap out of bed in the morning, then it is likely that this is indeed a true passion.
  3. How can I turn my passion into my goal? Finally, this is the question that can change your life. Too many of us, in the words of Henry Thoreau, "Lead lives of quiet desperation". We are employed in jobs we hate, we stumble from one joyless weekend to the next and our pleasures are fleeting. If only we could grasp our passions and set ourselves a much more worthy goal: to totally transform our lives.

So I set you this challenge. Stop what you are doing and take the time to figure out just how you could turn your life around by finding a way to spend all your time doing what you truly love.
